What are mineral rights?

A. The person who owns the minerals contained on a piece of land is said to own the "mineral rights." Minerals are considered real property. Before an energy company can drill on someone's land, even if that is more than a mile beneath the surface (in the case of current horizontal shale deposits) they must first lease the minerals from the owner of the rights.
